Mazurkas Travel, the partner and co-organiser of the IUAES 2019 Inter-Congress, is delighted to offer additional tour packages to delegates. Pre- and post-Congress tours are designed so that Congress participants can experience Poland’s complex culture, society and history, which is at the same time unique and representative of the region of Central Europe in its diversity.

DAY 1: GDAŃSK (23.08.2019, Friday) We start our tour in Gdańsk, so you may consider booking your flights directly to Gdańsk Airport. In case you need to fly to Poznań we can offer you an option with train transfer from Poznań to Gdańsk. Please choose your preferred option in the registration form. At 6:00 PM, we will meet for the dinner in one of the restaurants within the Old Town Area (the details will be given soon).

DAY 2: GDAŃSK (24.08.2019, Saturday) After breakfast we will explore Gdańsk. We will visit the European Solidarity Centre — cultural institution that honours Poland’s greatest civic success founded in order to “become the world’s centre for the ideas of freedom, democracy and solidarity to be fostered”. The museum commemorates the ‘Solidarity revolution’ — the mass workers’ movement led by Lech Wałęsa which played a crucial role in the dismantling of the Soviet bloc in 1989 and the fall of Communism in Europe. The ESC is also an educational, research and academic centre, housing archives, a library and multimedia facilities. After lunch time we will continue our trip and take a stroll along the Old Town. The afternoon is free to give you an opportunity to enjoy Baltic arts and crafts, including unique amber jewelry and collectables.

DAY 3: GDAŃSK – Gdynia – Malbork – TORUŃ (25.08.2019, Sunday) After breakfast, we will take a trip to Gdynia. Where we will visit the Emigration Museum. The historical building of the Marine Station – which for decades witnessed the departures of Polish ocean liners – now houses a museum that recount the migrations and fates of Poles around the world. At about midday we will travel to Malbork. We will visit the one of the best preserved medieval castles in Europe – the Castle of the Teutonic Order. You will have some free time for lunch and then we continue our tour and travel to Toruń, which is one of the oldest cities in Poland. The first settlement dates back to the 8th century. It is the birthplace of the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, who “stopped the Sun and moved the Earth”. There you will have time for an evening stroll to see the highlights of the Old Town.

DAY 4: TORUŃ – POZNAŃ (26.08.2019, Monday) Toruń is considered to be one of the most magnificent historic cities in Poland. After breakfast we will see the medieval part of the city which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site for its impressive 13th century Town Hall, superb churches and historic streets preserving Toruń’s past glory. A visit to the Copernicus Museum is included in your itinerary. You will also have a chance to taste traditional Toruń gingerbread. Transfer to Poznań in the afternoon.

Please note that the tour ends in Krakow. You may consider booking your return flights from Krakow. In case you need to fly back from Poznań we can offer you an option with train transfer form Krakow to Poznań. Tour operates with min. 15 persons.

DAY 1: POZNAŃ – Auschwitz – KRAKÓW (01.09.2019, Sunday) 8:00 AM, meet your guide and the rest of the group at the meeting point. In the morning we leave for the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum – the Nazi concentration and extermination camp. Auschwitz was the largest Nazi concentration complex during World War II and the largest Nazi ‘death factory’. The museum is devoted to the memory of Auschwitz’s prisoners and the victims of the Shoah. You will have time for lunch before the entrance to the Muzeum. In the afternoon, we will travel to Kraków – the former capital of Poland. Upon arrival, you will have free time to discover the city.

DAY 2: KRAKÓW – Wieliczka – KRAKÓW (02.09.2019, Tuesday) In the morning we drive to the Old Town, with its restored Main Square of magnificent houses and palaces. We will stop at St. Mary’s Basilica to see the magnificent wooden altar by Wit Stwosz. In the middle of the square is Cloth Hall built before 1349, but renovated in the 16th century with many shopping stalls inside. In the afternoon we will travel to Wieliczka – one of the oldest salt mines in the world. Wieliczka is an impressive underground world of salt lakes, labyrinthine passageways, chambers, chapels and numerous statues carved over 700 years ago by miners out of the rock salt. We will see displays of historic salt-mining technology and visit the unique Salt Works Museum, with the sculptures by contemporary artists. We will also visit the Oskar Schindler’s Factory located in the Kazimierz District – the former Jewish Quarter. The evening is free for you to wander Kraków’s streets.

DAY 3: KRAKÓW (03.09.2019, Monday) The morning sightseeing tour will feature Wawel, the Royal Castle, home to three dynasties of Polish monarchs. Its stately halls and exquisite chambers are filled with priceless art, valuable period furniture, and rare ancient objects. The collection of monumental 16th century tapestries is peerless. We will also visit Wawel Cathedral, the site of the cult of St. Stanislaw and of St. Jadwiga, Queen of Poland. This is the place where Polish kings were crowned and buried. Then we will stroll around the Kazimierz District, which was the centre of Jewish life in Kraków for over 500 years. We will see monuments of Jewish culture as well as numerous cosy art cafes, galleries and antique shops. In the afternoon our trip ends. You may consider booking your return flights from Krakow. In case you need to fly back from Poznań we can offer you an option with train transfer form Krakow to Poznań. Please choose preferred option in the registration form.

open-air archaeological and ethnographic museums

One day tour (01.09.2019, Sunday)

Meet your guide and the rest of the group at the meeting point. Transfer to Biskupin. We will start the sightseeing tour at the open-air Archaeological Museum in Biskupin, one of Poland’s official national Historic Monuments. The museum covers an area of approx. 38 ha, with numerous traces of the former settlement, from the Stone Age to the early Middle Ages. The discovery of those settlements has been designated as one of the 100 most important archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. Lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch, we continue our tour and travel to Dziekanowice village, whose main attraction is the open-air Greater Poland Ethnographic Park – one of the biggest of this type in Europe. It presents village buildings from all over the region, mostly timber framed, from the 18th and 19th centuries. Visitors can find original blacksmith’s equipment, interiors of peasants’ houses, windmills, and a hill with a magnificent view over Lake Lednickie.

Poznan – SzreniawaPuszczykowo – Poznan
open-air museum of agriculture and Polish Santa Maria

One day tour (01.09.2019, Sunday)

Meet your guide and the rest of the group at the meeting point. Transfer to Szreniawa village. where we will visit the National Museum of Agriculture and Agricultural-Food Industry. The Museum collects pieces related to the history of the Polish countryside, agriculture and agricultural-food industry from all over Poland. It has many open-air exhibits, including examples of agricultural tools and machinery, beehives, crafts, and other objects related to rural life. It is the only museum of agriculture of this type in Poland and one of the few and largest in Europe. Lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch, we will move to Puszczykowo, home of the Museum of Arkady Fiedler. Fiedler (1894-1985) was a Polish writer, journalist and adventurer who travelled to Mexico, Indochina, Madagascar, West Africa, Canada and the United States, and wrote 32 books about cultures, customs and natural wonders that have since been translated into 23 languages and sold over 10 million copies. The museum, located in his former home in the charming garden-town of Puszczykowo, houses a diverse range of artifacts collected by Fielder on his travels, as well as a 1:1 scale replica of Santa Maria – Christopher Columbus’ legendary sailing ship.
