RULES FOR FILMS AND AUDIOVISUAL PROPOSALS

The audiovisual programme is open for innovative works that conceptually and formally push the boundaries of how ethnographic film and other sensory media can be used in anthropology. We encourage submissions from anthropologists, filmmakers and new media artists whose work addresses issues connected to contemporary anthropological concerns or is grounded in in-depth engagements with human and non-human lives and lifeworlds.

More specifically, we invite:

  • Narrative driven ethnographic documentaries
  • Interactive documentaries
  • Experimental and sensory media projects suitable to be presented in a screening
  • Films and audiovisual projects produced in creative collaboration between anthropologists and their research participants (documentaries, ethnofictions, animations, etc.)

The criteria and requirements

  • Submitted films should have been completed on or after January 1, 2017.
  • The submission must be categorised as (1) short video (up to 30 min), (2) feature length, or (3) interactive.
  • The work can be produced in 35mm, 16mm or Super 8 film or in video (4K, HD, HDV, Mini DV, DVCam) or a combination of those. The format for the screening must be digital.
  • All submitted films need to be accessible on-line and the filmmakers need to provide a working public or private link to a review copy viewable online (Vimeo, You Tube, etc.) or, in exceptional cases, downloadable from a cloud service (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.) in one of these formats: mp4 (MPEG-4) or mov (Quicktime).
  • Films or parts of films that are not in English must be subtitled in English.
  • The organizers reserve the right to present public screenings of the films and videos selected at activities promoting the event and/or use them for research and educational purposes at Adam Mickiewicz University.
  • The screening copies of the films selected by the committee must be uploaded by 15 May 2019. Films not made available by this date will be automatically excluded from the program.
  • Films not made available by this date will be automatically excluded from the programme.
  • We encourage authors of the accepted films to participate in post-screening Q&As.
  • Authors of accepted interactive films will be required to either host the screenings (with the help from our programme coordinator and student volunteers) or send specific guidelines as to how the screening is to be organized by 15 May 2019.
  • All filmmakers who decide to attend the Inter-Congress will become members of the IUAES in 2019 (the membership fee will be included in the conference fee).
